Can You Extend Your Indonesia Visa?

Planning to stay longer in Indonesia? Whether you are visiting for tourism, business, family, or a longer-term purpose, it is important to understand whether your visa can be extended and how long you are allowed to remain in the country.

Indonesia offers several visa categories, and each has different extension rules. Some can be extended easily, while others have stricter limits.

Visa on Arrival Extension

The B1 Visa on Arrival (VOA) is commonly used by eligible foreign nationals visiting Indonesia for tourism and short-term activities.

It allows an initial stay of up to 30 days and can be extended once, giving a maximum total stay of 60 days. Holders of an electronic Visa on Arrival can generally process the extension online, while holders of a non-electronic VOA may need to visit the relevant immigration office.

If you already know that you want to stay in Indonesia for more than two months, another visa category may be more suitable.

Tourist Visa Extension

For travelers planning a longer stay, the C1 Tourist Visa can be a more flexible option.

The C1 visa provides an initial stay of up to 60 days. It may be extended several times, with the total permitted stay reaching up to 180 days, subject to immigration requirements.

This option can be useful for travelers spending an extended period in destinations such as Lombok, Bali, Java, or other parts of Indonesia.

Can a Business Visa Be Extended?

Certain business visitor visas may also allow extensions.

These visas are intended for permitted business activities such as meetings, negotiations, or other non-employment business purposes. The exact extension period depends on the visa category, so it is important to check the conditions attached to your visa before applying.

A business visitor visa should not be confused with a work permit or work-related ITAS.

What About KITAS / ITAS?

Foreign nationals staying in Indonesia for work, investment, family, education, retirement, remote work, and other eligible purposes may hold an ITAS, commonly referred to as a KITAS.

Extension rules vary depending on the specific ITAS category and its original validity period. Indonesian Immigration provides extension pathways for categories including workers, investors, family members, students, researchers, remote workers, and others.

Because these permits are more complex than ordinary visitor visas, supporting documents and sponsor requirements may also apply.

When Should You Apply for an Extension?

It is best not to wait until the last moment.

For ITAS, official Immigration guidance states that applications can be submitted before the permit expires, with the earliest filing period depending on the duration of the ITAS.

For visitor visas, extension procedures depend on the visa category and whether the visa was issued electronically or through another process.

Avoid Overstaying

Staying in Indonesia beyond the validity of your immigration permit can result in immigration penalties.

Before your current stay period ends, check:

  • Your visa category
  • Your permitted length of stay
  • Whether your visa is extendable
  • How many extensions are allowed
  • Whether a sponsor is required
  • Whether the application can be completed online
